9 Simple Questions
- Round 1
Process automation and workflow
management technology play an
increasingly important role
in the contemporary software
landscape. But even though more
than 25 years have passed since
the initial prototypes were
developed at Xerox Parc and
the University of Pennsylvania,
the workflow market is far from
stable. We are interested in
the future of the technology,
and its impact on organizations
- their structure, their processes,
and the way they are managed.
For this purpose, we have assembled
a group of 20 experts of the
workflow domain into a delphi
panel - some of these experts
have followed the technology
from its very inception, others
have designed and built commercially
successful systems. The delphi
panel consists of vendors, scientists,
industry analysts and users
of workflow technology. In our
first round, we asked the panelists
9 simple questions.
- The terminology
question probes,
whether there is a coherent
understanding of how process
automation technology is perceived.
- The organizational
impact questions
target the use of process
automation technology in organizations.
- The technical outlook
questions elicit educated
guesses about the future role
of process automation technology
in information system projects,
and its relationship to other
contemporary technologies.
- Finally, the market
development question
tries to assess the viability
of workflow vendors and their
products.
The following table lists the
questions in detail. Click on
