You might not know us. But NASA does.

Stevens Institute of Technology has been leading NASA-sponsored research projects for decades, ranging from developing planetary roving and landing technologies to examining climate change.

Our graduates — including a former director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center — are tapped to lead projects for NASA that move both the space agency and the world forward.

Here are some examples:

  • Stevens physicist Knut Stamnes works with NASA to improve satellite imagery of the Earth to better monitor for signs of global warming.
  • Professor Negar Tavassolian is developing a new type of wireless monitor for heartbeat and respiration to benefit astronauts.
  • Stevens professor Jason Rabinovitch computationally tested the Perseverance Mars mission's special parachute.
  • Professor Marouane Temimi is building an AI tool to help monitor New York City's water supply, with support from NASA.
  • Systems professor Paul Grogan works with NASA's Earth Science Technology Office as a principal investigator on a project to observe conditions on Earth.
  • Alumnus Ron Cobbs M.Eng. '12 directs avionics and payloads as chief engineer on the famed International Space Station.
  • Alumnus Matt Brand '21 helps NASA plan, shoot, process and send back high-quality images of Mars.
  • Researchers at Stevens, the Space Science Institute and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory completed the first real-world study of Martian helicopter dust dynamics.
