The Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) project utilizes an automated system that rapidly and intelligently integrates data from multiple radars and radar networks, surface observations, numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, and climitology to generate seamless, high spatio-temporal resolution mosaics.

It is imperative that reliable forecasts of severe rainfall over the next few hours are given in order to safeguard public health, safety, and welfare. It is particularly important to keep this in mind for densely populated urban areas where flash floods can cause physical damage as well as loss of life. The nowcast is generated using a version of the Lagrangian INtegro-Difference equation model with Autoregression (LINDA) model (Pulkkinen et al., 2021) was developed and visualized using the MRMS data.

The HRRR is a NOAA real-time 3-km resolution, hourly updated, cloud-resolving, convection-allowing atmospheric model, initialized by 3km grids with 3km radar assimilation. Radar data is assimilated in the HRRR every 15 min over a 1-h period adding further detail to that provided by the hourly data assimilation from the 13km radar-enhanced Rapid Refresh .

The product provides both the cumulative HRRR product for the next 18 hours over the US, and detailed weather predictions for cities in Northeast Jersey, enabling informed decision-making in response to changing weather conditions.

During Hurricane Ida in the New York Metropolitan area, the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) product provided a highly accurate and detailed rainfall forecast. This example underscores the crucial role of the HRRR product in enhancing situational awareness and supporting proactive measures to mitigate the effects of extreme weather events like Hurricane Ida in the New York Metropolitan area.
