This project focuses on cutting-edge radar technologies to enhance atmospheric observation and forecasting.
Stevens has deployed a state-of-the-art X-band Furuno weather radar—the only instrument of its kind in the NYC region. Operating at X-band frequency, it delivers ultra-high-resolution precipitation mapping (up to ~75m, compared to ~2 km for S-band radars View the interactive X-band vs S-band comparison map → ). This enables neighborhood-scale rainfall monitoring and short-term storm “nowcasting,” improving mid-range forecasts. The radar covers roughly a 50-mile radius and supports flood prediction, disaster response, and resilience planning for New York and New Jersey. Its data are integrated into teaching and research at Stevens, giving students hands-on experience in radar meteorology and hydrology.
