Stevens Through the Years

On May 6-8, 2016, America's Cup racing returned to New York Harbor for the first time since 1920. The origins of the famed race can be traced to the winner of a race in 1851 in England by a yacht belonging to John Cox Stevens known as America. John Cox Stevens was the first commodore of the New York Yacht Club, which he founded aboard his yacht Gimcrack in 1844. The NYYC became the keystone in the arch of American yachting and yacht racing, as the pastime developed into an organized sport in the mid-to-late 19th century. Its first clubhouse was located on the Stevens family estate, now the Stevens campus.
