Selected Faculty Honors and Achievements
Mehmet Kurt, Mechanical Engineering (SES), received a $472,501 award from the National Institutes of Health for a project focusing on early detection of Alzheimer’s disease, which he is working on with a colleague at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai.
Chihoon Lee was appointed as associate dean of graduate studies at the School of Business.
Nick Parziale, Mechanical Engineering (SES), was awarded a $1.2 million Office of Naval Research grant for work that aims to advance research into hypersonic flight.
Hui (Wendy) Wang and Jun Xu, Computer Science (SES), along with Yu Tao (CAL), received an award of $699,540 from the Secure and Trustworthy Computing Program of National Science Foundation. Their project will address the core issues of fair privacy from both technical and social perspectives. Separately, Xu received a $1.2 million National Science Foundation award, with a colleague from Northwestern University, for work aimed at uncovering software vulnerabilities.
Ellyn Lester, Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering (SES), received the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Education Foundation’s Carol A. Kueker Construction Education Visionary award. She was the unanimous choice of the selection committee.
Matthew Libera, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (SES), received $448,642 from the Army Research Office for his project titled, “Complexation Phenomena in Polyelectrolyte Microgels.”
Samantha Muka (CAL), was interviewed in a New York Times article that explored the complexities of keeping deep-sea life alive in exhibitions. Muka is writing a book on the history of aquarium technology.
Giuseppe Ateniese, Computer Science (SES), received a 2020 Jean-Claude Laprie Award in Dependable Computing.
David A. Vaccari, Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering (SES), was elected vice president of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists.
EH Yang, Mechanical Engineering (SES), received the 2020 IEEE Sensors Council Technical Achievement Award in the area of sensors.
Leslie Brunell, Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering (SES), was named a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). She recently became faculty advisor for the ASCE student chapter at Stevens.
