Stevens Institute of Technology President Nariman Farvardin discussed the need to increase diversity of representation in STEM higher education and career fields during a September panel in New York City for the Times Higher Education's U.S. Student Success Forum.
Farvardin discussed the challenges of increasing STEM diversity and highlighted recent Stevens initiatives aimed at doing so, including the Stevens ACES (Accessing Careers in Engineering and Science) program. Stevens ACES helped increase representation in the university's incoming class by nearly 50% by offering top-performing high school students from underserved communities full scholarships for Stevens' pre-college summer programs. During those programs, students explore engineering and science curricula while experiencing campus life. Stevens ACES support also assists students from underserved communities who matriculate to Stevens.
