Welcome to the inaugural issue of the SES Newsletter! I am excited to share all of the achievements and activities at our school through this monthly newsletter. I am deeply honored to have the privilege to serve as Dean of this school. Since joining Stevens on May 1, I have met many faculty, students and staff, and have been deeply impressed by the top talent, innovative spirit and top-notch research and educational programs here. I look forward to working with you all to build a stronger and more vibrant community, and elevating SES to an even greater level of excellence on the global stage as a prominent world-class school of engineering and science.

AWARDS & HONORS

CS’s Susanne Wetzel was selected to serve as a program director for the National Science Foundation’s SaTC (Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace) program for a period of one year. Wetzel, who currently serves as head of Stevens’ undergraduate cybersecurity degree program, will assist in long-range planning and budget development for the next year at the SaTC offices in Washington, D.C.

BCB’s Hongjun Wang received the 2017 Provost’s Award for Academic Entrepreneurship & Enterprise Development.

CS’s Samantha Kleinberg received the 2017 Provost’s Early Career Award for Research Excellence.

ECE’s Yingying Jennifer Chen received the 2017 Henry Morton Distinguished Teaching Professor Award.

MS’s Jan Cannizzo received the 2017 Harvey N. Davis Distinguished Teaching Assistant Professor Award.

RESEARCH
Tungsten Disulfide Monolayers

ME’s EH Yang’s illustration for his paper on “Tungsten Disulfide Monolayers: Graphene-Assisted Antioxidation of Tungsten Disulfide Monolayers: Substrate and Electric-Field Effect” was featured in Advanced Materials, Volume 29 Issue 18.

CEOE’s Valentina Prigiobbe received a 2-year $110,000 grant from the American Chemical Society’s Petroleum Research Fund. It will allow a PhD student to work on her “Measuring and Modeling the Behavior of a Nanoparticle-Stabilized CO2-Foam in Porous Media” project.

ECE’s Yingying Chen and Yu-Dong Yao received a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense University Research Instrumentation Program. The grant will allow them to develop ad hoc mobile networks for military applications.

PEP’S Rainer Martini received a $290,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Education. The grant will allow PEP to create localized training centers to educate local science teachers. This grant is a continuation of a program initiated by their previous grant.

RESEARCH
Marehalli Prasad

ME’s Marehalli Prasad is retiring. Prasad has been with Stevens for 37 years, where he taught classes on mechanical vibrations and engineering acoustics, conducted research and development with specialization in acoustics, noise control and vibration, and built the Noise Control Laboratory with an anechoic chamber and a reverberation chamber. Prasad was the only faculty member in the ME department dedicated to acoustics. He was also a faculty advisor for the ASME Student Section and an advisor for the Stevens chapter of Engineers Without Borders. In his spare time, Prasad led local student summer camps on culture, diversity and leadership. He even found time to produce, direct and stage plays and dance performances. His energy and enthusiasm will be missed.

BCB’s David Ferrara, Andrew Falcone and Maria De Abreu Pineda won the pitch competition at Stevens' Annual Innovation Expo. They won $10,000 which they will use to further develop the idea commercially. They’re continuing their research over the summer under advisor Vikki Hazelwood and Marissa Gray.

Omar LopezCEOE’s Omar Lopez was awarded a certificate of appreciation from the National Governing Board of the ASCE’s Coasts Oceans Ports and Rivers Institute for outstanding leadership as student chapter president.

ME’s SURE HOUSE, winner of the 2015 Solar Decathlon competition, took up permanent residence at Liberty Science Center.

ME’s FSAE student team

ME’s FSAE student team built a Formula 1 style race car from the ground up and raced it at the international FSAE collegiate competition. It was Stevens' first time competing in 23 years.
