ABSTRACT

Writing the blog Wait But Why, Tim Urban has discovered that there are a lot of not normal things about the future. Like humans on Mars. And the virtual world. And superintelligent AI. In an upcoming talk, he wants to discuss all of this with you so together, we can figure out what to do about it.

BIOGRAPHY

Since he started writing the long-form, stick-figure-illustrated blog Wait But Why in 2013, Tim Urban has produced dozens of viral articles on a wide range of topics, from why we procrastinate to why artificial intelligence is scary to why we haven’t seen any signs of aliens.

Today, Wait But Why receives over 1 million unique visitors each month, and the blog has over 440,000 email subscribers. Tim’s articles have been regularly republished on sites like Quartz, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Time, Business Insider, and Gizmodo, and he has given talks at companies like Facebook, Google, and Uber, and schools like MIT and Brown. Tim also spoke at the 2016 TED Conference in Vancouver. So far, his TED talk has been viewed more than 8 million times.

Before starting Wait But Why, Tim co-founded ArborBridge, a test prep firm dedicated to providing a highly effective SAT/ACT prep using the newest advances in technology, pedagogy and neuroscience. Founded in 2007 and based in Santa Monica, ArborBridge works online with students in 42 different countries, as well as in-person with students in Los Angeles and New York City.

He received an A.B. in Government from Harvard University in 2004.
