Stevens Through the Years

Boat racing is a proud Stevens tradition that dates back to the origins of the famed yacht race known as America's Cup. As Stevens' impressive performance in this year's Solar Splash competition proved, that tradition is alive and well at Castle Point. Back in the summer of 1974, concrete, rather than solar, was the focus of the competition. Stevens was one of seven universities in the New York metropolitan area to participate in a concrete canoe race sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The Stevens team worked more than 400 hours building and experimenting with their concrete canoe entry, including testing the canoe in the famed Davidson Laboratory. When the race began on the Hudson River, Rutgers immediately pulled ahead of the pack, which included teams from Columbia University, Manhattan College and Newark College of Engineering (now known as NJIT). Stevens started out farther behind, but gradually crept closer. Soon Rutgers and Stevens were neck and neck, until Stevens surged ahead to a dramatic victory. Stevens on Social Media

As a university founded by a family of inventors, Stevens' proud past informs and inspires successive generations to new heights of innovation. Two buildings represent how the past and future are intertwined at Stevens: Edwin A. Stevens Hall, the cornerstone building on Stevens' campus since 1870, and SURE House, winner of the 2015 Solar Decathlon and now on permanent display at the Liberty Science Center.
