Stevens Through the Years

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Samuel C. Williams Library, which was built in 1969. Preliminary architectural renderings designed by the architecture firm Perkins+Will in 1963 reveal how dramatically different the Stevens campus could have been had the university chosen to go in that direction. A proposed four-story structure was originally planned at the eastern end of Sixth Street, adjacent to the present-day Babbio Parking Garage, and would have extended the length of the Castle Point cliffside facing the Manhattan skyline. Although that design was not used, these alternate renderings provide a fascinating look into the possibilities considered at the time. A new exhibit, "Discovery and Exploration: A History of the Stevens Library," is currently on display in the Sam's Place gallery on the first floor of the library.
