Stevens Through the Years

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the graduation of pioneer artist Alexander "Sandy" Calder in 1919. A skilled metalsmith, Calder studied mechanical engineering at Stevens before turning to art in the 1920s. He revolutionized the concept of sculpture through his creation of the works of art known as "mobiles" and "stabiles." Biographer and art critic Jed Perl delivered a lecture at Stevens as part of the centennial celebration of Calder's graduation. What emerged was a fascinating portrait of an immensely gifted and complicated individual, whose humor and playfulness characterized a zest for life and whose creative genius and remarkable problem-solving ability were evident to those who knew Calder at Stevens.
