Stevens Through the Years

Stevens junior pitcher Charlie Ruegger was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft, making him only the second player in university history to be selected in MLB's First Year Player Draft, and the first in 45 years. The connection between Stevens and baseball dates back even further. Nearly 172 years ago, the very first recorded modern baseball game was played on Stevens family property. On June 19, 1846, the Knickerbocker Club faced off against the New York Nine on what was once Colonel John Stevens' Elysian Fields. While the Fields no longer remain, a plaque at the intersection of Hoboken's Washington and Eleventh streets — several blocks west of the actual game site — commemorates the creation of America's national pastime.
