Stevens Through the Years

Sheila Banks became the first African American woman to graduate from Stevens when she received her bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering in 1978, seven years after women were first admitted into the undergraduate program. During her time at Stevens, Banks was a member of the Society of Women Engineers, served as secretary of the Black Student Union, and played violin and sang in the Glee Club. Shortly after graduating, she accepted a technical market position with Westinghouse Electric Corporation and was later promoted to sales engineer in its New York City offices.
