Stevens Through the Years

ImageAn exhibit at the S.C. Williams Library at Stevens explores the fascinating achievements of Dr. Henry Morton – the first President of Stevens, who served from 1870-1902. His exciting and popular lectures on chemistry and physics at the University of Pennsylvania and elsewhere put Morton on the radar to be selected as the first President of Stevens when it was incorporated in 1870. He was interested in literature and the arts, wrote poetry, and was part of a group of scholars who worked on translating the hieroglyphs of the Rosetta Stone. At Stevens, he promoted a "liberal-technical" education that combined liberal arts with a science-based engineering curriculum. The library exhibit, which runs until February, also features some of Morton's beautiful original artwork.
