Stevens Through the Years

ImageA member of the Stevens Class of 1897, Walter Kidde is perhaps best known as the founder of a leading company manufacturing fire extinguishers and smoke detectors. But it's not widely known that Kidde founded Walter Kidde & Company as a construction firm when he was 23, constructing factory complexes, residences, public buildings and roads (including drives on the estate of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Kidde's squash partner). Kidde later made lasting contributions to New Jersey's roadways as a member of the New Jersey State Highway Commission. During his time there, he oversaw the world's first traffic circle in Camden, the world's first clover-leaf intersection near Woodbridge, and the Pulaski Skyway.
