Stevens Through the Years

ImageAs we look ahead to Memorial Day, we honor the memory of alumni such as the late Mitsuru Hayashi M.S. '52, a decorated Stevens alumnus who served in the U.S. armed forces during World War II. He was a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a unit that rescued fellow American soldiers from German capture during the height of the war in the Vosges mountains of northeastern France. For his bravery during that and subsequent missions in the European theater, Hayashi later received two Purple Hearts, the French Medal of Honor and a Congressional Gold Medal, among other honors. After the war, Hayashi returned to the U.S., obtained a master's in electrical engineering from Stevens and eventually settled in Seattle, working for decades at Boeing as an engineer on such projects as supersonic aircraft. He also contributed expertise to America's Apollo lunar landing program in the 1970s.
