Stevens Through the Years

ImageEvery year on February 15 we honor the founding of Stevens, which was made possible thanks to a bequest by Edwin A. Stevens (1795-1868). The youngest son of Colonel John Stevens had a mind for business and engineering. He invented and patented the Stevens plough, as well as an airtight fire-room system for his family's steamboat fleet. When Edwin passed away in 1868, he left money in his will to establish the university. With the guidance of his widow, Martha Bayard Stevens, the school was established in 1870 as America's first college devoted to mechanical engineering.
