Synergies between Systems Engineering and (Industrial) Design
The design community has developed a suite of creative methods that addresses both the quest for a deep understanding of a problem/issue and the needs for the associated stakeholders as well as generating concepts that addresses these in the best possible way. (See e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wikilDesign thinking for a quick overview). As a gross simplification one could say that SE tends to take a rather analytical approach to understanding needs and generating concepts, whereas the design community tends to be more hands-on, immersive and creative. Also here some questions of interest could be: How do these two disciplines approach this task w.r.t methods and tools? What can they learn from each other? Are there potential overlaps and conflicts? How do they complement each other? How does "design" and "engineering" currently collaborate? How could the collaboration/interface between the two be improved?
