Abstract:  Although a book on probability theory was translated into Chinese at the end of the nineteenth century, it was ignored for the next thirty years. This talk explores possible reasons for the delay in light of a seventeenth century Chinese tradition - playing dominos while simultaneously composing poems - which suggests an underlying knowledge of the quantification of chance.
