High-Angle Annular-Dark-Field Imaging in the Cryo-STEM (right) of two-phase polymer nanoparticles says nothing about the sharpness of the polymer-polymer interface.

8 nm resolution spectroscopic imaging can differentiate between water, acrylate-based copolymer, and PDMS (bottom left) to show that the interface is diffuse (below right) and, consequently, relatively strong.

A strong heterointerface is important for maintaining hard and soft nanoparticles in close proximity to make tough and hard coatings.
