The Delta Tau Delta Rho
Chapter Alumni Scholarships
In the Spring of 1998 over
20 Rho Delt Alumni led by Pete Stamer Class of 1961 and Bruce Boylan
Class of 1963 joined forces to raise money towards what is now known
as the Delta Tau Delta Rho Chapter Alumni Scholarship Fund. As of
January 2000, generous Delt Alumni have pledged close to $250,000
towards the program which is scheduled to be completed by January
2003. At that time our goal is to have collected a grand total of
$280,000 which would enable us to award at least 8 undergraduate
scholarships of $1000 on an annual basis. Awards are named based on
the consensus of the committee, however, those Delt Alumni who
donate $25,000 or more will have the opportunity to name their
award. The current list of awards is shown below.

Lee Allen Dowches '91
Memorial Scholarship

Lee Allen Dowches
The story of how we
started the first scholarship is quite tragic, but important to
tell. Lee Allan Dowches Class of 1991, was a Rho Delt who died in
1988 as a result of injuries sustained when the rung of an extension
ladder on which he was standing broke as he was affixing letters to
the rear of the Rho Chapter House. At that time, Lee's pledge class,
fellow Delts and other Stevens IFC members assisted in raising money
toward what would be known as the Lee Allan Dowches Memorial
Scholarship.

The Walter Stamer '64
Memorial Scholarship
Walter Stamer grew up in
Sparta New Jersey and graduated from Newton High School. He earned a
Mechanical Engineering Degree in 1964 and a Masters of Management
Science from Stevens in 1970.
Walt was nicknamed the big "W" by his Delta Brothers based on his
large size and his athletic ability. In addition to interscholastic
and inter-fraternity sports he played varsity basketball and
lacrosse. He was a part of the 1963-lacrosse team that won the
Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship and was Co-Captain of the 1964
team. He scored 89 goals during his lacrosse career placing him
fourth on the all time scoring list. After college he became an avid
tennis player and won the North Carolina doubles championship five
times in his respective age group.
Walt began his career with Union Carbide and rose through the ranks
to become Director of Operations for Rhone-Poulenc at Research
Triangle Park in North Carolina. Professionally, Walt was a
registered professional engineer, and a member of the Society of
Plastic Engineers. As I am sure, you will agree Walt Stamer
represents the outstanding example of athletic and career
accomplishment that is a part of the Stevens and Delta Tau Delta
Tradition.

The Edward Dalton '60
Memorial Scholarship
While
at Stevens, Edward Dalton, served in a wide range of leadership
positions that led him being selected for Khoda, Gear and Triangle,
Pi Delta Epsilon and the John Henry Newman Honorary Society. A
Jersey City native, Ed attended Stevens on a General Motors
Scholarship. As STUTE editor 1959-1960, he first protested, then
ultimately accepted the demolition of the Stevens Castle. He
memorialized its replacement by the Stevens Center with the STUTE's
first color issue and an editorial entitled "The Proud Past Must
Yield To An Even Prouder Future." The New York Collegiate Press
Association recognized his efforts by naming him Editor of the Year
in 1960.
When he was presented with the 1994 Stevens Honor Award, Ed's advice
to his fellow alumni was simple "Dare to dream." Ed's dreams
included completing an MS at Stevens in 1960 and a Harvard MBA in
1966. He then embarked on a 24-year career with New York Telephone.
Ed's most recognizable and lasting achievements evolved from his
community service. He served as chairman of the Jersey City Planning
Authority during the 1970's. Where others saw rotting piers, rusty
railroad tracks, and abandoned factory buildings, Ed envisioned and
fought for what we now know as Newport Center, Jersey City. It has
become the paradigm for waterfront development throughout America.
As chairman of the Boys Club in the 1980's, Ed led an effort to
replace its dilapidated clubhouse, transforming an abandoned coal
bunker into contemporary facility that has received national
recognition. It also introduced basketball to several youths who
ultimately reached the NBA.
Although multiple sclerosis forced an end to his NYNEX career in
1990, Ed continued to teach in the Stevens telecommunications
graduate program until 1994. Ed currently resides at St. Ann's Home
in Jersey City.
