The basic "building blocks" of writing are grammar and its rules. Native speakers are often unaware of the rules, for they "intuit" them. The term grammar is defined broadly here to include spelling, punctuation and mechanics. Students may benefit from understanding some of the basic grammar rules to prevent them from making mistakes in writing. This section of the Writing Instruction Tutorial (WIT) site serves as a guide and aid to students to help them communicate effectively and to give meaning to their writing.
