PRV 501 - Topics in Personalized Medicine (Credits: 3)

This elective course (without prerequisites) is designed to provide both undergraduate and graduate students with an overview of the major issues in the healthcare system that are affected by personalized medicine.  Personalized medicine is a medical model that recommends the customization of healthcare, with all decisions and practices being tailored to the individual patient by use of genetic or other information.  Continuing advances in medical research, engineering and computer science have enabled a new era of personalized medicine by facilitating the generation of unprecedented quantities of medical data per patient and positively influencing medical outcomes.   Academia, industry and government have all identified personalized medicine as a key driver of influence at all levels of the US healthcare sector, which currently generates 17% of the GDP and is growing rapidly.
