This week’s Student Spotlight features Claire Griffin, a mechanical engineer graduating in 2017.
1. How did you get involved with Solar Decathlon?
I was recommended for the Communications team by my first semester CAL professor. During the second semester I was really interested in what we were doing so I decided to stay with the project during the summer and do both construction and communications work.
2. Are you excited for the Xpo in Irvine, California? What are you planning on doing during your stay?
I’m super excited! I’m looking forward to cooking for the dinner party we have to throw and I hope we get to do a lot more vlogs.
This week’s sponsor shoutout is for DOW Powerhouse, a solar company that specializes in solar shingles.
DOW’s solar shingles (which are being used on Ecohabit) are the first of their kind and are more efficient than regular solar arrays. Blending seamlessly with the rest of a house, DOW’s solar shingles eliminate the need for a big, bulky solar rack, which drastically lowers the cost of implementing solar power in a house.
Once in place, the power collected from the solar shingles goes through a converter and is then sent throughout the house to be used. A net data meter monitors the house’s energy usage and lets the occupants see how much they save on energy costs as well as how much energy their solar array produces.
Courtney Gnash and Hoak talk about the latest happenings in Ecohabit! Check it out!!!
A lot has gone on in the past few weeks with our house. Our Nanawall arrived and was promptly installed; it looks great! Also, our spray foam insulation was put into the house. We’ve also begun testing for our plumbing system. The western red cedar siding has been installed on most of the house, and the grey fiber cement has been put into place. We worked on putting rain screens on the side of the house as well. Ecohabit really looks like a home now, and we are so excited to finish it and bring it to sunny California for the XPO!
This week’s Student Spotlight is on Courtney Gnash, a Music & Technology major graduating in 2016.
How did you get involved with Solar Decathlon?
My professor from first semester mentioned the Solar Decathlon project to me and noted that they needed more people on their communications team, so I decided to join!
Are you excited for the Xpo in Irvine, California? What are you planning on doing during your stay?
I am beyond excited! I plan on keeping everyone back home updated on the progress of our house through our website, Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and other social media outlets.
What is your major and how are you contributing your skills to the project?
