Dr. Joseph Mitola to Address Future of Radio Standards at Wireless Innovation Conference

Dr. Joseph MitolaVice President for The Research Enterprise at Stevens Institute of Technology and Distinguished Professor Joseph Mitola is participating in a cognitive radio panel at SDR '10: The Wireless Innovation Conference this Wednesday, December 1 in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Mitola and other leaders in cognitive radio research will address the theme of the panel, "The Future of Radio Technologies." Incorporating dynamic spectrum access and robust networking, smart radio technologies promise to impact commercial and defense applications and will require new regulatory and business frameworks. Panel discussion will address the possibilities as well as the challenges ahead for the development and implementation of cognitive radio systems.

As a nod to the role that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plays as a regulator of the thickening radio domain, The Honorable Meredith Atwell Baker, FCC Commissioner, will introduce the panel, and the FCC's Chief Technologist, Dr. Douglas Sicker, will moderate.

Dr. Mitola is recognized internationally for his groundbreaking research in software-defined radio (SDR) and cognitive radio systems and technologies. In addition to having published the first technical paper on software radio architecture in 1991, Dr. Mitola coined the term cognitive radio for the integration of machine perception of RF, visual, and speech domains with machine learning into SDR to make dynamic spectrum access technically viable. His doctoral dissertation, Cognitive Radio (KTH, June 2000), created the first architecture for such autonomous radios, formulating the cognition cycle on which the sensing and opportunistic use of radio spectrum whitespace is based.

As a recognized leader in cognitive systems, Dr. Mitola speaks frequently at advanced communications technology events, including an engagement later this month at IEEE GLOBECOM 2010. His remarks there will emphasize the importance of security in future commercial systems for electric power, healthcare, and other critical infrastructures.

SDR '10 is the annual technical conference of the Wireless Innovation Forum, a non-profit dedicated to driving technology innovation in commercial, civil, and defense communications. The conference brings together leaders in SDR and reconfigurable radio communications for educational keynotes and panels, technical paper presentations, tutorials and workshops, and a technology showcase. SDR '10 will be held in the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, in Washington, D.C. November 30 through December 3.
