Fighting Bacterial Infection in Orthopedic Implants

Fighting Bacterial Infection in Orthopedic Implants” is our latest installment of the Inventiveness, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (ICE) Blog which takes a detailed look at some of the research that makes Stevens a leader in technology innovation.

This article highlights Dr. Matthew Libera’s research on reducing and eliminating the risk of infection when undergoing orthopedic implant procedures. He has created a Hydrogel solution which acts as a protective barrier between surfaces of an orthopedic implant and airborne bacteria, providing a critical solution for this rapidly expanding industry, already worth over $16 billion and projected to be worth $23 billion by 2012.

Dr. Libera’s efforts have also played a central role in the establishment of many unique research initiatives. Over the past five years, eight different Stevens professors have contributed to the study of bacterial infection, there has been substantial student involvement such as from Altida Patimetha, and even international research opportunities.

For more information on the interdisciplinary approach to bacterial infection research, please visit the Stevens ICE Blog!
