Green Career Possibilities in Sustainable Engineering

A recent article appearing in northjersey.com highlights the extensive opportunities made possible through pursuing or redefining your career in the field of Green Technology. The author, Eli Amdur, gives specific examples of determined individuals who decided that reinvesting in Green Education would be a lucrative career move.

In the article, Rebecca Segal, an engineering graduate from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), performed a “diligent search for local universities offering graduate certificates in green technology. By the end of the day, she had decided that the one in sustainable engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, in Hoboken, was the one she wanted.” She is currently enrolled in the Sustainable Engineering Graduate Certificate program at Stevens and is poised to benefit from not only the coursework, but the academic environment provided by the University.

Rebecca’s choice of entering the Sustainable Engineering Graduate Certificate program will educate her in a variety of green proficiencies and prepare her for a career in one of the most rapidly expanding fields in our economy. In fact, an article on yahoo.com sights that $40 billion will be allocated for creating green jobs under President Obama’s stimulus package. Furthermore, according to Dr. Keith Sheppard, Professor & Associate Dean of Engineering & Science at Stevens, a background in sustainable engineering provides graduates with a "critical holistic foundation that recognizes the future context of engineering where sustainability will be a key consideration while offering flexibility to build a career in a multitude of technical areas." He goes on to say that "the graduate certificate in sustainable engineering at Stevens provides a pathway to competencies valued by employers in green engineering fields and beyond."

The Sustainable Engineering Graduate Certificate at Stevens specifically prepares students to:

  • Provide a holistic, systems perspective to the impact of human activity on the environment, including the role of engineering
  • Educate students in the concepts of sustainable development and industrial ecology
  • Provide insight into sustainability tools and metrics such as life cycle analysis and ecological footprint
  • Show how engineering decisions, particular with regard to design, can support sustainability goals
  • Develop awareness of the ethical, economic, social and political dimensions that influence sustainability

In addition to the course material, Rebecca is also immediately surrounded by an array of networking opportunities, and according to the author is “visible to a cadre of professionals from prominent companies – and to the companies themselves.” These opportunities, along with the dramatic growth potential of a career in the green field, make Stevens an excellent choice for your green engineering education.
