These are the steps necessary to set up Mac Mail for use with a Stevens e-mail account via the IMAP protocol.

Instructions

Step 1: Adding an Account

Open the Mail application and under file, click Add Account.

Step 2: Entering Your Information

A window should appear. Enter your full name in the Full Name dialog box, your Stevens e-mail address in the Email Address dialog box and your Stevens password in the Password box. After you are done entering your information, click the Continue button.

Step 3: Verify Certificate

At this point, a box may appear that say "Mail can’t verify the identity of “stevens.edu”." Disregard this message and click Connect.

Step 4: Incoming Mail Server

At this point, the “Add Account” window will appear. Under Account Type select IMAP. In the Incoming Mail Server dialog box, type in nexus.stevens.edu. In the User Name dialog box, type in your Stevens username and in the Password dialog box, type in your Stevens password. After you have entered in the appropriate information, click the Continue button.

After you complete the above process, you may receive an error message, as pictured below. This is normal and not a problem. Just click Continue and the problem will be resolved later on in the process.

Step 5: Outgoing Mail Server

The next window that will appear will ask you questions that are similar to the previous window. In the Outgoing Mail Server dialog box, type in nexus.stevens.edu. Make sure that Use only this server is checked. Next, check the box next to where it says Use Authentication. Type in your Stevens username in the dialog box that says User Name and your Stevens password in the dialog box that says Password. After you have completed entering the required information, click the Continue button.

  • It is normal to get an error similar to the error in Step 4 in this step also. Again, this is normal and not a problem. Just click Continue and the problem will be resolved later on in the process.

Step 6: Outgoing Mail Security

The next window that appear will question you about Outgoing Mail Security. Make sure that you uncheck the box next to where it says Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and under where it says Authentication select Password.

Step 7: Account Summary

The next window that appears is a summary of the information that have entered this far. Click on the Create button.

Step 8: Navigating to Preferences

Your inbox should be created! Go to the main menu bar and click Mail and then click Preferences from the drop down menu. The preferences can also be reached by holding down ⌘,

Step 9: Navigating to Accounts Preferences

The window that will open is the preferences window.

You must click on the Accounts tab.

Step 10: Navigating to Advanced Accounts Preferences

In the Accounts windows, click on Advanced, as shown in the picture below.

Step 11: Disabling SSL

Notice that in the Advanced window, Use SSL is checked. Uncheck Use SSL. The port should automatically change from 993 to 143

Step 12: Edit SMTP Server List

Next, click on the Account Information tab. Under where it says Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) select Edit SMTP Server List...

Step 13: Using a Custom Port

When you click Edit SMPT Server List... a window will pop up that looks like the one below. Notice how it says Use default ports (25, 465, 587).

Click where it says Use custom port and enter in the number 587. Make sure you uncheck where it says Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). Click OK

Step 14: Finishing Up

Close the Preferences window that you are in and save all changes, if you are prompted to do so. Your Stevens Email is now properly configured with Mac Mail.
