Configuring Proxies

Proxies access is not permitted on-campus.

If you do not want to use a VPN connection to connect to the Library Databases from off Campus, proxies can be used. Hardcoding of the proxy server address is required now that the Automatic Proxy Configuration Script defaults to no proxies.

Internet Explorer

  1. Click Tools -> Internet Options
  2. Select Connections tab
  3. Click LAN Settings
  4. Uncheck Automatically detect settings and Use automatic configuration script.
  5. Check Use a proxy server for your LAN
  6. In the Address entry box, type netcache1.stevens.edu. Use 8080 for the port number.
  7. Click OK twice to save settings.

Firefox

  1. Click Tools (in Windows) or Edit (in *nix)
  2. Click Options or Preferences
  3. Select the Advanced tab
  4. Select the Networking sub-tab
  5. Click Settings under the Connection section
  6. Select Manual Proxy Configuration
  7. Type netcache1.stevens.edu into HTTP Proxy. Use 8080 for the port number.
  8. Click OK and then Close to save your settings.
  • Unlike IE, these settings are in effect whether or not you are using a VPN connection

Safari

  1. In the upper right hand corner, click on the Gear and select Preferences....
  2. Select the Advanced tab.
  3. Under the Proxies section, click Change Settings.
  4. Under the Local Area Network section, click LAN Settings.
  5. Uncheck Automatically detect settings and Use automatic configuration script.
  6. Check Use a proxy server for your LAN
  7. In the Address entry box, type netcache1.stevens.edu. Use 8080 for the port number.
  8. Click OK twice to save settings.
  9. Close the Preferences window

Google Chrome

  1. In the upper right hand corner, click on the Wrench and select Options.
  2. Select the Under the hood tab.
  3. Under Network section, click Change proxy settings.
  4. Under the Local Area Network section, click LAN Settings.
  5. Uncheck Automatically detect settings and Use automatic configuration script.
  6. Check Use a proxy server for your LAN
  7. In the Address entry box, type netcache1.stevens.edu. Use 8080 for the port number.
  8. Click OK twice to save settings.
  9. Click Close on the Google Chrome Options window
